For countless centuries, the humble spoon has been a symbol of giving and
nurturing, used in the care and sustenance of those unable to care for
themselves. We present the Heart Spoon in honor of Millie Mangus Gillespie, whose life exemplified agape, the unconditional love of Jesus Christ. She believed that "when good people do nothing, evil wins." (Edmund Burke). We dedicate this art to children's causes across the globe, the main goal is to help provide compassionate, effective Christian counseling for children whose lives have been devastated, including from the trauma of sexual abuse. The sooner this counseling begins, the better, to enable successful recovery and freedom from inordinate guilt, scars, reality twisting, denial, scapegoating, and more imposed by ill-intentioned family or others who want it kept quiet, all to block the healing when early counseling is delayed or does not take place. The following are must reads for primary and secondary victims, and all counselors. (1) Teresa Pitt Green: Restoring Sanctuary, in which she promotes informed understanding, healing and reconciliation. She credits the dedicated counseling of a wise priest who helped her see clearly that she was not guilty of what sex predators did to her, and that by surrendering it all to Jesus Christ, she was finally and miraculously set free. (2) Exceptionally valuable also is When the Bough Breaks, by Dr. Aphrodite Matsakis, a helping guide for parents of sexually abused children. "This book provides a means of breaking the vicious psychological cycle of child sexual abuse. Dr. Matsakis writes with compassionate concern for both child and parent," according to (3) Christine A. Courtois, Ph.D., author of yet another valuable reference, Healing the Incest Wound: Adult Survivors in Treatment. This art, from the beginning is meant to help children, and would not be possible without the steadfast encouragement, faith, and prayers of Millie and a few others who grasp its message, that love is giving. Today Millie is no longer with us, but her spiritual closeness is felt warmly as this continues for children, with its much needed message of agape love. We pray this to help children and teens all across the world, long into the future. The artist and others pursue writing, educational, and legislative lobby efforts to insure that intervention occurs to stop pedophiles, and any who protect pedophiles, so that innocent children are happy and safe through the growing years to adulthood and always. Millie believed that it is for love that we are put here on this planet. This is how she lived her life, as a total giving of herself, both as devoted mother and as an angelic teacher in the inner city schools. While running for the office of United States president, Senator Robert Kennedy stopped at a crowded school in Charleston, WV and asked the principal to introduce him to one of his most caring teachers. The principal chose my mother. Later that day, centered on the front page of the Charleston Daily Mail was Millie, smiling happily in her classroom, surrounded by the affable Bobbie Kennedy and her adoring students. To both family and friends, this stands out as one of our proudest moments. She was, as always from this special blessing and recognition, very gracious and humble. Many of Millie's students, and her granddaughter, went into the medical field, from the inspiring influence of this brilliantly gifted science teacher. She helped others achieve what she could not afford to do in her younger years, to attend medical school and to help mankind in the medical professions.
